THE GRIFFIN AND THE MINOR CANON, INSCRIBED BY SENDAK, WITH DELIGHTFUL ORIGINAL DRAWING
(SENDAK, Maurice) STOCKTON, Frank R. The Griffin and the Minor Canon. With Illustrations by Maurice Sendak. New York: Holt, Rinehart and Winston, (1963). Small, slim quarto, original half light brown cloth, original dust jacket.
Early edition of this “gently tongue-in-cheek fairy tale of the last of the griffins,” inscribed by the artist, “Dec. ‘68, For Sidney & Barbara, from the Minor Canon & Maurice Sendak,” with an original drawing of the Minor Canon pronouncing, “Blessings on you both!”
During the early years of his career, novelist and humorist Frank Stockton wrote several short fantasies for children. In The Griffin and the Minor Canon, Maurice Sendak illustrates Stockton’s charming tale about a griffin who comes to see his stone likeness gracing a cathedral door. Without “First Edition” on the copyright page. See Hanrahan A55. The recipients of this copy were professional picture framers engaged by Sendak to frame pieces in his art collection, including some of his own original drawings.
Small closed tear to original dust jacket. A fine copy.
