INSCRIBED FIRST EDITION OF THE FIRST VOLUME IN MARY STEWART'S "MERLIN TRILOGY"

STEWART, Mary. The Crystal Cave. London: Hodder and Stoughton, (1970). Octavo, original boards, original dust jacket.

First edition of the first novel in Stewart's "Merlin Trilogy"—a poignant and powerful retelling of the Arthurian legends through the famous enchanter's eyes, and "one of the more convincing Arthurian works" (Clute & Grant, 898)—presentation copy inscribed by the author in the year of publication, "For Hermann and Marie Brück, with my thanks and affectionate good wishes, Mary Stewart, June 25th 1970."

In contrast to the confused conjurer or menacing magician found in other reimaginings of the Matter of Britain, Stewart's novel acknowledges familiar fantasy elements of Camelot but foregrounds the historic, harsh realities of Dark Age Britain. "Follows the story of King Arthur's wizard adviser from his childhood and his education in the ways of magic to his involvement with the rise of Arthur. Besides her depiction of Merlin's career, which draws upon a variety of historical and legendary sources, the series is significant for her depiction of Merlin's personality; he comes across as a sympathetic figure often caught between conflicting loyalties, both political and spiritual" (Barron). Winner of the Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature in 1971 and the Frederick Niven prize. Barron, Fantasy and Horror 7-342.

Two bifolios (pages 141-48) expertly reinforced at text block; dust jacket with a bit of rubbing to spine ends and corners, clean and near-fine. A lovely copy, quite scarce inscribed.
