FIRST EDITION OF STEINBECK’S CANNERY ROW
STEINBECK, John. Cannery Row. New York: Viking, 1945. Small octavo, original yellow cloth, original dust jacket.
First edition of this classic assemblage of colorful characters, in second-state cloth binding.
Amid the sardine canneries, vacant lots, flophouses, and honky-tonks of Monterey, California, Steinbeck has assembled a colorful gallery of memorable characters. The first edition of Cannery Row was printed using materials in conformity with wartime conservation measures. Issued both in paper wrappers and in cloth with dust jacket, it was first bound in light buff cloth. When supplies ran out, the job was finished in yellow cloth (as here). Jacket design by Arthur Hawkins. Goldstone & Payne A22b. Valentine 174. Bruccoli & Clark I, 355. Salinas, 38. Bookseller ticket.
Text fine, light soiling to original cloth; bright dust jacket with small closed tear with tape repair to rear panel, light edge-wear to spine ends lightly affecting one letter of “Steinbeck.” A very good copy.
