"WITH A HOST OF GOOD WISHES FROM HIS FATHER'S OLD COACH": ALONSO STAGG'S TOUCHDOWN!, INSCRIBED BY HIM TO THE SON OF ONE OF HIS COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYERS

STAGG, Amos Alonzo and STOUT, Wesley Winans. Touchdown! New York: Longmans, Green, 1927. Thick octavo, original red cloth.

First edition, second printing, of one of the earliest and most important works on American football, illustrated with 16 pages of historical photographs, inscribed to the son of a member of his football team at the University of Chicago: "To Arthur Hoffman 2nd. With a host of good wishes from his father's old coach. Amos Alonzo Stagg."

Amos Alonzo Stagg "was the most compelling single force for the tactical growth and ethical elevation of the game" (DAB). Long-time football coach at the University of Chicago, Stagg "packed his book with interesting personal experiences, stories of famous teams, bits of coaching psychology, and descriptions of thrilling games." Self-described as "a tramp newspaper man," co-author Wesley Winans Stout was one-time editor of The Saturday Evening Post. Without dust jacket. Published the same month as the first edition. This copy is inscribed to Arthur Hoffman 2nd, the son of Arthur Hoffman, a player on Stagg's University of Chicago football team at the turn of the 20th century. Arthur Hoffman went on to coach at Ripon and Tulane. It contains an owner gift inscription on the half title by Hoffman's wife offering their son an explanation of the provenance: "Arthur from Mother. Mar. 6, 1932. Highland Park Ill. Mr. Stagg was your father's ideal. He always said any young man would succeed in life if he only listened to Mr. Stagg and followed his teachings."

Interior fine, slight soiling and rubbing to cloth. A near-fine inscribed copy.
