Maus, A Survivor's Tale

FIRST EDITIONS OF MAUS, BOTH VOLUMES INSCRIBED BY SPIEGELMAN, WITH A WONDERFUL ORIGINAL FULL-PAGE DRAWING IN VOLUME II

SPIEGELMAN, Art. Maus I, A Survivor’s Tale, My Father Bleeds History. WITH: Maus II, A Survivor’s Tale, And Here My Troubles Began. New York: Pantheon, 1986, 1991. Two volumes. Octavo, original half cloth, original dust jackets.

First editions of Spiegelman’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus books, Volume I inscribed on the half title by him, Volume II inscribed by him across the half title and the page opposite, “For David! Art Spiegelman ‘06,” accompanied by his full-page original sketch of one of the characters.

Spiegelman’s Maus books are a monumental achievement, both as a Holocaust survivor narrative and as a dramatically unique use of the comic strip form. A deceptively simple, chillingly effective cat-and-mouse allegory, Maus interweaves young Vladek and Anje’s horrifying struggles to survive in Hitler’s Europe and in Auschwitz with aging Vladek and his son Artie’s troubled relationship as they try to piece together “normal” lives. Recognizing the originality of the work, the 1992 Pulitzer Prize board created a special category to honor Spiegelman and the story’s two volumes. Spiegelman first published parts of Maus in the magazine Raw, which he co-founded, between 1980-1991; these first edition books collect and order the original strips into two complete volumes. Owner gift inscription (V.I).

A scarce inscribed set in fine condition.
