Annals of San Francisco

"INTELLIGENCE HAD BEEN RECEIVED OF THE FINDING OF GOLD IN LARGE QUANTITIES…": ANNALS OF SAN FRANCISCO, 1855

SOULE, Frank; GIHON, John H. and NISBET, James. The Annals of San Francisco; Containing a Summary of the History of the First Discovery, Settlement, Progress, and Present Conditions of California. New York: D. Appleton and Co., 1855. Large, thick octavo, original black- and gilt-stamped brown morocco, all edges gilt.

First edition of this early text on San Francisco, richly illustrated with six steel engraved plates, one folding mp, and more than 140 in-text engravings, in publisher's deluxe full morocco.

"Recognized as one of the most important reference books of the period, The Annals of San Francisco not only gives an outstanding narrative history of San Francisco, but also supplies much information on mining and its impact on this instant city… The text illustrations and plates, some based on daguerreotypes, form one of the best pictorial records of Gold Rush California" (Kurutz, 606). It is a "necessary reference book of San Francisco to the middle fifties, compiled mainly from newspapers and information received from pioneer citizens" (Zamorano 80). The folding map, of the southwestern territories as well as California, is by J.H. Colton and is based on the map of the United States and Mexican Boundary Commission of 1850-53. Cowan, 219. Decker, 83. Howes S769. Sabin 87268. Bookplate.

Folding map with expertly repaired four-inch closed tear near stub and a bit of skillful reinforcement to inner paper hinges; publisher's deluxe morocco near-fine and quite lovely. A desirable copy.
