“ENJOY YOUR BIRTHDAY WHILE YOU CAN”: THE FIRST VOLUME IN A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS, DATED AND INSCRIBED BY “LEMONY SNICKET” HIMSELF IN THE YEAR OF PUBLICATION
SNICKET, Lemony. The Bad Beginning. New York: HarperTrophy, 1999. Small octavo, original laminated paper boards, pictorial cover design.
First edition of the first volume in “A Series of Unfortunate Events,” the dedicatory page bearing the author’s characteristic blindstamp and his handwritten inscription, “For Chlöe, enjoy your birthday while you can. 16.X.1999.”
Despite its title, The Bad Beginning proved a very auspicious beginning indeed for one of the most imaginative series to appear in recent years. Daniel Handler, writing under the pseudonym “Lemony Snicket,” inaugurated with this book “a literary opera buffa of calamity [that] has been a children’s book phenomenon second only to Harry Potter… The inventive use of irony and language, including defining big words… shows that ‘kids have a nose for literature that is often underestimated” (New York Times).
A fine copy, with a desirable (and delightfully ominous) inscription by “Snicket.”
