(SMITH, W. Eugene) CAMERA INTERNATIONAL. The Legacy of W. Eugene Smith: Twelve Photographers in the Humanistic Tradition. Paris: Camera International, 1991. Tall quarto, original photographic paper covers. $125.

First edition, American issue, of this special publication of Camera International, serving as a catalogue of the 1991-92 exhibition of 12 contemporary photographers working in the tradition of W. Eugene Smith. From the collection of acclaimed photojournalist Peter Turnley, signed by him.

“A heroic figure in American photography, Smith created photo essays so compelling in their power that it can be said his work changed, as well as documented, history” (McDarrah, 457). “His work, imbued with moral fervor, evinces a clear difference between good and evil, the individual’s ability to transcend his or her circumstances, [and] the inherent goodness (even heroism) in people” (Fred Ritchin). This handsome exhibition catalogue “pays homage [to Smith]… Homage, but also confrontation of his work with that of the twelve recipients [of the Smith Foundation grants]” (Claude Collard). Text in French and English. Issued simultaneously in Paris. From the collection of Peter Turnley, acclaimed photojournalist for Newsweek, Life and Harper’s Magazine, who has covered “almost every important international news event of the last 15 years” (New York Times), with his signature.
