"I COULD FEEL LIFE—A BURNING COAL TOSSED ON A VALENTINE OF HAY"

SMITH, Patti. Woolgathering. (New York): New Directions, (2011). Small octavo (4-3/4 by 7-1/4 inches), original tan cloth, original dust jacket.

First revised expanded edition, preceded only by a small 1992 collection, here featuring 13 luminous works by Patti Smith, signed on the title page by her, including Smith's tribute to playwright and actor Sam Shepard.

"A sensibility—fluid, visionary, risky—marks the 13 pieces in Woolgathering." Portions of this elegant volume had appeared "as part of the series of small books ('3 by 4 inches in size,' Smith recalls, 'like a tiny Indian prayer book)," published in 1992. In this first revised and expanded edition, "we see the circularity, not only of the pieces but also of Smith as an artist… there's the sense of things happening beneath the surface, the notion of the world as, at heart, a place of mystery. And perhaps most important, there is Smith's identification with these shades, these phantoms, who, she later learns, are called the woolgatherers" (Los Angeles Times). Here "Smith pares down her prose to a state of vivid impressionism… fans of her music will not be surprised by her mastery of it here" (Observer). Included is "Cowboy Truths," a tribute to her friend, colleague and former lover, the playwright and actor Sam Shepard, who died in 2017. With frontispiece facsimile and 19 black-and-white photographic illustrations, most full page. Precedes the first English edition.

A fine signed copy.
