SIGNED BY AARON SISKIND
SISKIND, Aaron. Places: Aaron Siskind Photographs. New York: Farrar, Straus, Giroux, (1976). Quarto, original gray cloth, original dust jacket. $1750.
Signed limited first edition of this photographic foray into abstract expressionism, number 21 of only 100 copies, signed by Siskind.
Although Aaron Siskind began his career as a documentary photographer, the 100 full-page duotone images collected here are reflective of his interest in abstract expressionism. "If Siskind's elegant, static images of natural details, or of crumbling walls and peeling posters, are at odds with the sense of movement that characterizes stream-of-consciousness photography, what both have in common is the 1950s concern with gesture" (Parr & Badger, 250). "We can only marvel that the most commonplace subject matter becomes poetic, and that the fragment becomes an artistic unit" (Beaumont Newhall). Introductory essay by Thomas Hess. Without the original photograph, Lima 80 (1975) that accompanied this limited edition. See Roth, 152.
