HARLEM DOCUMENT, INSCRIBED BY AARON SISKIND

SISKIND, Aaron. Harlem Document: Photographs 1932-1940. Providence, Rhode Island: Matrix, (1981). Oblong quarto, original white stiff coated stock, original photographic dust jacket.

First trade paper edition of the classic photobook featuring Siskind’s “engagingly perceptive” images of Harlem, inscribed, “To Joan, Greetings! Aaron Siskind, 5-4-82,” with 52 finely screened black-and-white photogravures.

Aaron Siskind's "engagingly perceptive" (Roth, 152) photobook captures daily life in Harlem and features stories and poems collected for the Federal Writers' Project by writers such as Dorothy West and Ralph Ellison. Throughout his influential career, "Siskind sought to demonstrate the expressive potential of the medium" (New York Times) and "exemplifies the move… from social documentary to the more personally inflected photograph." A leading member of the Photo League in the 1930s, Siskind "was prime mover behind the League Feature Groups' most ambitious project, Harlem Document" (Parr & Badger I:250). Foreword by Gordon Parks; text from the Federal Writers Projected edited by Ann Banks. First trade edition, published simultaneously with the cloth-bound issue and in the same year as signed limited edition, no priority established.

A very nearly fine signed copy.
