FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF DEMONIALITY OR INCUBI AND SUCCUBI, 1879

SINISTRARI OF AMENO. Demoniality or Incubi and Succubi. Paris: Isidore Liseux, 1879. Octavo, modern full navy morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers.

First edition in English of this scarce work on demonology.

The author, Father Ludovico Maria Sinistrari, was a 17th century Franciscan priest who wrote this work in Latin in the year 1680. The publisher and translator, Isidore Liseux claimed that the heretical text was then lost until 1872, when Liseux discovered the manuscript in a London bookshop. Liseux published the work in Paris in French and Latin in 1875, then translated it into English and published this, the first English edition, in 1879. The goal of the work is to prove that spirits exist, purportedly in an attempt to combat the increasing skepticism of the Renaissance. However, the author differentiates these spirits from demons, in order to emphasize that they can be saved, and that consorting with them is not tantamount to Satanism. Considerable attention is paid to sexual relations between these spirits and human beings. The Latin original is published along with the English on facing pages.

A few pages tipped in, two small marginal tears to concluding leaves, binding handsome. An about-fine copy. Scarce.
