Autograph letter from General Sherman answering a question about General Johnston's surrender by referring his correspondent to a part of his Memoirs.
The letter reads: "No 75—West 71 St., New York, Dec 23, 1889. Jas McCloskey Esq—Dear Sir, Johnston surrendered his army at Bennett House 6 miles west of Durham Station on the Raleigh-Hillsboro Road see Sherman's Memoirs 2nd ed. vol 2, pages 348-349. Yours truly, W.T. Sherman." Sherman's acclaimed but controversial Memoirs were first published in 1875; the second edition appeared in 1886.
Minor closed splits along folds, longer on second page (blank). Sherman has signed at the lower fold, but his signature is clear and fine.
