Very Young Calendar 1930

FIRST EDITION OF THE VERY YOUNG CALENDAR 1930, WITH VERSES BY A.A. MILNE AND ILLUSTRATIONS BY E.H. SHEPARD

MILNE, A.A. The Very Young Calendar 1930. London: Methuen, 1930. Tall quarto, cord-bound as issued, original pictorial beige paper wrappers.

First edition of this monthly calendar based on A.A. Milne's poetry favorite, with verses by Milne and illustrations by E.H. Shepard.

In 1930, A.A. Milne began to move toward merchandising his much-loved books for children. This monthly calendar featuring Shepard's beautiful illustrations allowed readers to look at When We Were Very Young all year round. "When We Were Very Young caught the imagination of a public beginning to be sated with Peter Pan and the fairy-fashion, and the book was bought in quantities. It went through 12 printings in just over a year and brought Milne a fame which, despite all his apparent successes, had really deserted him up to that time" (Carpenter, 200). Few of these calendars have survived to the present as many owners discarded them at the end of the year. Without rare original box. Neatly hand-colored to style by an early owner.

Light foxing to wrappers. An extremely good copy. Rare.
