MARY SHELLEY’S LODORE, IN CONTEMPORARY BINDING

(SHELLEY, Mary). Lodore. By the Author of “Frankenstein.” Paris: A. and W. Galignani, 1835. Octavo, contemporary half red pebbled morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers.

Early edition of this autobiographical novel by Mary Shelley, published the same year as the scarce London first.

This autobiographical novel is based on a number of people and events from her early life, including her relationships with her father, William Godwin, and her husband, Percy Bysshe Shelley (as well as his relationship with his first wife, Harriet, who committed suicide). Lodore had greater success than any of Shelley’s novels since Frankenstein. Editions were brought out in Paris, Brussels and New York in the same year as the now scarce London first. Contemporary owner signature to title page.

Interior generally clean; contemporary binding near-fine.
