"HERE IS A DREAM OF LOVE": SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION OF SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET WITH 22 COLOR PLATES BY ARTIST WILLIAM HATHERELL, ONE OF ONLY 250 COPIES SIGNED BY HIM, IN ORIGINAL GILT-STAMPED VELLUM

(HATHERELL, William) SHAKESPEARE, William. Shakespeare's Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. With illustrations by W. Hatherell, R.I. London & New York: Hodder & Stoughton, [1912]. Tall quarto (9 by 11-1/4 inches), original full gilt-stamped vellum, top edge gilt, uncut.

First signed limited edition illustrated by artist William Hatherell of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, number 103 of only 250 copies signed by Hatherell, with 22 vibrant color plates tipped-to gold-bordered leaves, uncut in original gilt-stamped pictorial vellum, a splendid copy.

This sumptuous volume of Shakespeare’s timeless work features 22 color plates from original water colors by William Hatherell, an artist highly regarded for his subtle shading and expressive faces. Hatherell was also famed for his “refusal to be pressured into hasty work… He always had the painter's appreciation of color, the sense of the values of broad masses, and a feeling for atmosphere" (W. Hatherell and His Work, Art of the Illustrator, 6). His frontispiece image of Juliet is "strikingly reminiscent of Ellen Terry on her balcony" (Wells, ed. Shakespeare Survey 49:128). The original "exquisite water-color" of the frontispiece is in the Tate in London: "here is color in delightful harmony, here is a dream of love" (Salamen, Shakespeare in Pictorial Art, 47). Without original cloth ties.

Text and plates very fresh, faintest soiling to vibrant gilt-stamped vellum. A beautiful about-fine signed copy.
