THE HENRY IRVING SHAKESPEARE, SPLENDIDLY BOUND BY THE RELFE BROTHERS

SHAKESPEARE, William. The Works of William Shakespeare Edited by Henry Irving and Frank A. Marshall. London: Blackie & Son, 1890. Eight volumes. Small quarto, contemporary full navy calf gilt, raised bands, elaborately gilt-decorated spines, red morocco spine labels, marbled endpapers and edges.

1890 edition of Henry Irving’s Works of William Shakespeare, in a beautiful prize binding for the Ipswich School done by the Relfe Brothers of London, with the school's emblem on the front boards.

Edited by Henry Irving, the most famous and talented of the "actor-managers" of the London stage. His acting ability was legendary, and in 1895 he received the honor of knighthood for his contributions to the English stage, the first ever accorded an actor. Irving was hailed in particular for his brilliant and innovative Shakespearian productions. This edition was designed to treat Shakespeare's work "as that of a dramatist, whose plays were intended not to be read as poetical exercises, but to be represented by living men and women before a general audience." With notes and introductions to each play, and with handsome full-page engravings by Gordon Browne, as well as numerous in-text drawings. This edition was first issued in 1888-1890. Jaggard, 551. With prize bookplate from Ipswich School in the first volume.
