“A BONA-FIDE ENGLISH HERO”: FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF SHACKLETON’S HEART OF THE ANTARCTIC

SHACKLETON, Ernest. The Heart of the Antarctic. Being the Story of the British Antarctic Expedition 1907-1909. Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1909. Two volumes. Large octavo, original silver-stamped pictorial blue cloth, top edges gilt.

First American edition of Shackleton’s account of the British Antarctic Expedition of 1907-09, for which the intrepid explorer achieved worldwide acclaim for reaching within 97 miles of the South Pole. Profusely illustrated with 12 beautiful color plates, numerous photogravures (many full page), plans, diagrams, three folding maps and a folding panorama.

Shackleton first gained fame as a member of Scott's expedition of 1901-02. Here he recounts his 1907-09 expedition which came within 100 miles of the South Pole-a record-before being forced to return due to lack of supplies (Amundsen, taking a much shorter route, reached the Pole in 1911). This was the first expedition to reach the Magnetic South Pole, the first to ascend the active volcano Mt. Erebus, and substantially increased knowledge of the geology and biology of the region. Profusely illustrated with 12 color plates, photographic frontispieces and over 200 other photographic illustrations, more than 40 plans and diagrams, three folding maps and one folding panorama. Issued the same year by William Heinemann in London. Color-outlined folding maps and a panorama housed in pocket at rear of Volume II. Binding variant "a" (preferred), with silver-gilt. Without scarce dust jackets. Spence 1098. Renard 1447. Rosove 305.C1a. Conrad, 148. See Stam & Stam 7.4. Ex-library, with library bookplates, embossed stamps, pockets and evidence of call number removal from spines.

Inner paper hinges of Volume I expertly reinforced. Occasional light scattered foxing. Cloth bindings clean and fresh, silver-gilt bright. An extremely good copy.
