LOVELY ANIMATION CEL FEATURING “LITTLE BEAR,” WITH AUTOGRAPH SENTIMENT AND NOTE FROM MAURICE SENDAK

SENDAK, Maurice. Autograph sentiment signed, measuring 1-1/2 by 7 inches. FRAMED WITH: Original celluloid overlay mounted on original hand-painted background (cel from The Little Bear Movie), measuring 9 by 12 inches. WITH: Autograph letter signed (in Little Bear notecard). No place: 2 January 1999. Entire piece measures 17 by 19-1/2 inches.

Large, original animation cel from The Little Bear Movie, featuring the title character from author Else Holmelund Minarik and illustrator Maurice Sendak’s beloved series, framed with an autograph presentation sentiment from Sendak and accompanied by an autograph note from him.

Early in his career, Sendak illustrated Else Holmelund Minarik’s “memorable series of early readers,” the Little Bear books (begun in 1957). “Minarik created a truly lovable character. Little Bear’s escapades are filled with humor and the right mix of fantasy and realism. But the emotional tone of the book, which speaks to the universal needs for love, acceptance and independence, is particularly captivating” (Silvey, 585, 463). The Little Bear Movie was released in 2001, following the character’s 1995-99 television series. The autograph sentiment reads: “For my old friend Martha Prescott with all best wishes! Maurice Sendak, Jan.’99.” Sendak’s message in the card reads, in full: “Jan. 2, ’99. Dear Martha, This note is long overdo! Please forgive me–you’re right, I have been very busy & Little Bear is very much a part of that business. I’m so glad you enjoy it–and I think you may be right–Minnie Kane would have taken pleasure in the series. I’m sending along a cel–meaning a separate painting on celluloid from a moment in the animated film. This is for you & yours–with my best wishes for a happy, healthy & splendid New Year! I still miss your Grandma. Maurice Sendak. PS. The cel is an original piece of art from the animated feature, so keep it away from extreme heat or cold and enjoy it! Best regards to Becca and Eric!”
