OPEN HOUSE FOR BUTTERFLIES, INSCRIBED BY RUTH KRAUSS AND MAURICE SENDAK, WITH AN ORIGINAL SENDAK DRAWING OF A LITTLE GIRL AND A CAT DANCING
(SENDAK, Maurice) KRAUSS, Ruth. Open House for Butterflies. [New York]: Harper & Brothers, (1960). 12mo, original half black cloth, pictorial endpapers, original dust jacket.
First edition, early issue, inscribed by the illustrator: “For Nina & Herman, Maurice Sendak,” with an original drawing of a little girl and a cat laughing and dancing, and additionally inscribed by the author with a decorative squiggle: “& love Ruth.”
Winner of the New York Times Award for Best Illustrated Book, this was one of eight acclaimed collaborations between Ruth Krauss and Maurice Sendak. Early issue, with Harper & Brothers imprint and first-issue numbers and blurbs on dust jacket flaps, but with later price of “$1.95” stamped on price-clipped dust jacket and Harper Blue Ribbon seal. In 1960, the year of initial publication, Harper & Brothers was purchased by Harper & Row. That same year, Harper & Row released a new issue at a slightly higher price of $1.95, featuring the Blue Ribbon Seal. This copy, featuring the old Harper & Brothers imprint, appears to have been released as part of that early issue. See Hanrahan A39.
Book fine, price-clipped dust jacket near-fine with only light wear to extremities. A beautiful near-fine inscribed copy. Rare.
