“THE ROMANTIC ADVENTURER REBELLING AGAINST THE LAWS OF THE GREEDY WORLD”: FIRST EDITION OF SCOTT’S ROB ROY, 1818

SCOTT, Walter. Rob Roy. Edinburgh: James Ballantyne for Archibald Constable, et al., 1818. Three volumes. 12mo, contemporary full brown polished calf, gilt-decorated spines, marbled edges.

First edition of the sixth “Waverley Novel,” in handsome contemporary calf-gilt.

"When I think of Rob Roy I am impatient with all other novels" (Robert Louis Stevenson). Scott's novel recounts the exploits of one of Scotland's greatest heroes, Robert "Rob Roy" MacGregor, "the romantic adventurer rebelling against the laws of the greedy world" (An English Library, 46). The father of the historical novel, Scott "created the Celtic Highlands in the eyes of the whole civilized world. If this be not first-rate power, it may be asked where we are to find it" (Allibone, 1977). With scarce half titles. Worthington 5. Todd & Bowden 112Aa. Owner pencil signature ("Carmichael") in each volume; ink initials on title page of Volume I.

Occasional spotting, corners gently rounded. Near-fine and desirable in contemporary calf-gilt.
