"MY HOPE, MY HEAVEN, MY TRUST MUST BE, MY GENTLE GUIDE, IN FOLLOWING THEE"

SCOTT, Walter. The Lady of the Lake. A Poem. In Six Cantos. London: William Smith, 1841. 12mo, later full tan pebbled morocco gilt with decorate boards and spine painted in red, green, blue and yellow, all edges gilt.

Handsomely bound copy of Scott's well-known poem, with engraved frontispiece.

"Inspired by Scott's enthusiasm for the wild country of Loch Katrine" (Baugh et al., 1209), The Lady of the Lake, upon its publication in 1810, proved wildly popular, sparking the Highland Revival's romanticized passion for Scottish history and culture. It "marked the pinnacle of Scott's popularity as a poet. With 25,000 copies sold in eight months, it broke all records for the sale of poetry, and Scott's fame spread beyond Great Britain to the United States" (Edinburgh University Library). Early gift inscription.

Interior fine, modest wear to extremities of attractive decorative binding, spine mildly toned.
