Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy

“ONE OF THE MOST PROVOCATIVE BOOKS EVER WRITTEN ON THE FUTURE OF CAPITALISM”

SCHUMPETER, Joseph A. Capitalism, Socialism, and Democracy. London: George Allen & Unwin, (1943). Octavo, original blue cloth.

First English edition (published one year after the first American), “full of brilliant observations and conjectures” (Niehans, 450).

This was the last book Schumpeter published in his lifetime and it was also his most controversial. A self-described "hopeless" conservative, Schumpeter's extolled the virtues of risk-taking entrepreneurs who, he believed, had made capitalist nations rich. But he feared that the entrepreneurial spirit and capitalism would be crushed by the huge corporate and governmental bureaucracies developing in the West. "Full of brilliant observations and conjectures," this work caused an immediate sensation and has remained a popular— and important— work (Niehans, 450; Heilbroner, 420-24). Originally published in the United States in 1942.

Interior fine, expert restoration to original cloth, mild fading to spine. A very good copy.
