"MR. SAVAGE IS NOT ONE TO WASTE A WHOLE WORD IF NO WORD AT ALL WILL DO": SAVAGE'S WESTERN MASTERPIECE, THE POWER OF THE DOG, 1967 FIRST EDITION

SAVAGE, Thomas. The Power of the Dog. Boston, Toronto: Little, Brown, (1967). Octavo, original orange paper boards, original dust jacket.

First edition of Savage's critically acclaimed fifth novel, basis for the 2021 film adaptation, for which director Jane Campion won the Academy Award for Best Director.

Savage's epic of the American West was published to positive reviews, including in the New York Times: "The novel's success is an achievement in the round. The story, the people, the scene, the sense of doom combine to quicken our imagining of what happened on the Beaverhead [River] in the 1920's. The prose is austere and economical. Mr. Savage is not one to waste a whole word if no word at all will do" (Marshall Sprague, New York Times Book Review, April 9, 1967). Despite limited initial commercial success, the novel gained a cult following, prompting Little, Brown to reissue it in 2001 with an afterword by Annie Proulx. Jane Campion wrote and directed a film adaptation, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst, which went on to win Campion the Academy Award for Best Director in 2022. "First Edition" stated on copyright page.

Book fine, original dust jacket with tiny snag along front panel upper edge, bright and very nearly fine. Very scarce and desirable in this condition.
