SANDBURG, Carl. Remembrance Rock. New York: Harcourt, Brace, (1948). Two volumes. Octavo, original blue cloth, cream paper spine labels, original slipcase. $750.

Signed limited first edition, number 289 of 1000 copies, an especially distinctive presentation copy of Sandburg's "panoramic historical novel," movingly inscribed in Vol. I by Sandburg in the year of publication, "Dear R— M— whatever may be the basic and continuously recurring theme herein it is one that you have known deeply and at cost. ever affectionate regard for you and M— Carl Sandburg 1948."

Sandburg's only novel is based on four well-known events in American history: the arrival of Pilgrims at Plymouth Rock, the Revolutionary battle at Valley Forge, John Brown and the Civil War, and events leading up to World War II. "The tale follows a pendant struck in 1607 and passed down through American history… An ambitious, almost panoramic historical novel, Remembrance Rock achieves Sandburg's stated aim, to write "an epic, weaving the mystery of the American Dream with the costly toil and bloody struggles that have gone to keep alive and carry further that dream" (Kenan Heise). Signed limited edition: without fragile acetate dust jackets as often. Heise 37.

Books fresh and bright with trace of rubbing to spine labels, minimal edge-wear to slipcase. A lovely inscribed copy.
