Bambi: A Life in the Woods

LIMITED FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH OF FELIX SALTEN’S “LITTLE MASTERPIECE,” BAMBI, ONE OF ONLY 1000 COPIES

SALTEN, Felix [i.e., SALZMANN, Siegmund]. Bambi: A Life in the Woods. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1928. 12mo, original green cloth.

Limited first edition in English, one of only 1000 copies preceding the larger trade edition. A lovely copy.

“Using the pseudonym Felix Salten, journalist Siegmund Salzmann wrote several anthropomorphic animal tales, including the novel Bambi… This story of life in the forest is written with integrity, emotion and great skill… Bambi remains [Salten’s] best-known work, and it is a classic in the genre of animal stories” (Silvey, 571-72). The book features lovely black-and-white headpieces and decorative endpapers, all by Kurt Wiese; and an enthusiastic foreword by Nobel Prize-winning author John Galsworthy in which he hails the book as “a little masterpiece.” Walt Disney famously adapted the book to the screen in his 1942 animated film. Bambi first appeared in German in 1921. This limited edition of only 1000 copies was “printed and bound for distribution among friends of The Inner Sanctum,” Simon and Schuster’s imprint for affordable fiction during the Great Depression. Issued without dust jacket; without exceedingly scarce original publisher’s wraparound band.

Text fine; gilt on spine only very slightly darkened. Very nearly fine.
