Elephant folio (measures 31-1/2 by 22-1/2 inches), period-style crimson straight-grain morocco with marbled central panels on boards, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands. $88,000.

First edition of this extraordinary work of 24 elephant folio hand-colored aquatints of views in India, as well as Egypt, Ceylon, Abyssinia, the Cape of Good Hope, and St. Helena, with a pictorial aquatint title page. Plates untrimmed and in fine condition with superb color. One of the most sought after of all India view books, even more rare in this condition.

One of the most beautiful and desirable of all color-plate books, this set of magnificent views engraved by D. Havell after Henry Salt was intended by its publisher to be a continuation of the Daniell's Oriental Scenery and was prepared to be uniform in size, style and execution to that great work. George Annesley, Viscount Valentia, left England in June 1802 on the Minerva, for a Grand Tour of the East and "the first British mission to Abyssinia… to conclude an alliance to obtain a port in the Red Sea in case France, under Napoleon, should seize Egypt" (Abbey). Henry Salt had earlier finished his training with the topographical draughtsman and diarist, Joseph Farington, and Valentia appointed him to be his official artist and secretary for the tour. The plates include fine views of Chowringhee, the fort of Jaunpur, two aquatints of Lucknow including the mosque in the Great Imambara, the great Temple at Tanjore, Poona, the Chaitya Cave, two fine aquatints of Cairo, Cape Town, etc. Valentia and Salt returned to England in 1806. Salt eventually became British Consul-General in Egypt, where he died at the age of 47. Complete with all plates. Plates watermarked 1805-1809. Only a bit of light dust-soiling to some margins; the plates are untrimmed and the images in pristine condition with superb, vivid color. Beautifully bound.
