Histoire de Juliette

DE SADE’S JULIETTE, HANDSOMELY BOUND

SADE, Marquis de. Histoire de Juliette ou Les Prospérités du Vice. [Bruxelles: Jules Gay], 1797 [i.e., circa 1870]. Six volumes. 12mo, contemporary full crimson morocco, raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt, uncut.

Later edition of de Sade’s philosophical and erotic novel Juliette, finely bound in full morocco by Morrell.

De Sade published Juliette and its companion novel Justine anonymously. When brought to Napoleon's attention, he ordered the author discovered and arrested, and de Sade was imprisoned in the insane asylum at Charenton without trial for the rest of his life. This copy without the 60 engravings mentioned on the title pages. First published 1797-1801; while the title pages bear the date 1797, these volumes were actually published several decades later. Text in French. Gift inscription in verse to front free endpaper of Volume I.
