THE EARLIEST COMPLETE MANUAL OF HOUSEHOLD MANAGEMENT: FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF A NEW SYSTEM OF DOMESTIC COOKERY, 1807

[RUNDELL, Maria Eliza]. A New System of Domestic Cookery, Formed Upon Principles of Economy, and Adapted to the Use of Private Families. Boston: William Andrews, 1807. 16mo, contemporary three-quarter burgundy sheep. Housed in a custom leatherette clamshell box.

First American edition of Mrs. Rundell’s popular cookbook, in contemporary binding.

Rundell originally prepared her work for her married daughters' use, "editing and putting into order the hundreds of handwritten recipes and remedies she had compiled and collected… until the whole voluminous collection of a lifetime's culinary trials and errors had been sorted and indexed" (Quayle, 118-19). "As the earliest manual of household management with any pretensions to completeness, it called forth many imitations" (DNB). "No edition of this work dated earlier than 1807 has been located… The first edition may have appeared late in 1805 or early in 1806" (Cagle 971). Lowenstein 54. Bitting, 411. Shaw & Shoemaker 21244. Pencil signature and notation on title page.

Embrowning to interior, expert restoration to contemporary binding. A very good copy.
