“A LUSH, MAGICAL NOVEL” (TORONTO STAR): THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS, SIGNED BY ARUNDHATI ROY
ROY, Arundhati. The God of Small Things. (London): Flamingo/HarperCollins, (1997). Octavo, original purple paper boards, original dust jacket.
First edition of Roy’s lauded first novel, signed by her on the title page.
Roy’s autobiographical first novel won the 1997 Booker Prize for Fiction and reached fourth position on the New York Times Bestsellers list for independent fiction; it was subsequently chosen as one of the New York Times Notable Books of the Year for 1997. TIME also listed it as one of the five best books of 1997. While Western readers embraced the book—the New York Times called it a “dazzling first novel” and “at once so morally strenuous and so imaginatively supple”—The God of Small Things was criticized in Roy’s native India for its depiction of sexuality, and Roy was charged with obscenity.
Book fine; very light edge wear to fine dust jacket.
