"A LUSH, MAGICAL NOVEL" THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS, SIGNED BY ARUNDHATI ROY
ROY, Arundhati. The God of Small Things. New York: Random House, (1997). Octavo, original half green cloth, pictorial endpapers, original dust jacket.
First American edition of Roy's award-winning first novel, signed on the title page by her.
Roy's autobiographical first novel won the 1997 Booker Prize for Fiction and was chosen one of the New York Times Notable Books of the Year for 1997. TIME also listed it as one of the five best books of 1997. While Western readers embraced the book—the New York Times called it a "dazzling first novel" and "at once so morally strenuous and so imaginatively supple"—The God of Small Things was criticized in Roy's native India for its depiction of sexuality, and Roy was charged with obscenity. Preceded by the Indian first edition. Issued same year as the English and Canadian editions, no priority established.
A fine signed copy.
