NATIONAL GUARD APPOINTMENT SIGNED BY THEODORE ROOSEVELT AS GOVERNOR OF NEW YORK

ROOSEVELT, Theodore. Document signed. Albany, November 24, 1900. One sheet of vellum, measuring 12 by 16 inches, printed on recto and finished by hand, with gold seal. $2000.

Original document signed by Theodore Roosevelt appointing Charles Parker Marlette a Second Lieutenant of the Thirty-Sixth Separate Company (Second Regiment), Infantry of the National Guard for the State of New York.

Roosevelt signed this document near the end of his governorship; three weeks earlier, he had been elected United States vice president on a ticket with William McKinley. In less than a year, he would become president after anarchist Leon Czolgosz assassinated McKinley at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo on September 6, 1901. Countersigned by Edward M. Hoffman, Adjutant General. With the oath of office signed by Marlette on the verso.

Minor staining and wrinkling. A handsome document.
