LARGE VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAIT OF FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT IN THE OVAL OFFICE, SIGNED BY HIM AS PRESIDENT, HANDSOMELY FRAMED

ROOSEVELT, Franklin D. Photograph signed. (Washington, D.C.): Signal Corps U.S. Army, circa 1940. Large vintage gelatin silver photographic print (14 by 17-inches) mounted on card stock, matted and framed (total measures 22-1/4 by 25-1/4 inches).

Exhibition-size vintage photographic print, circa 1940, capturing President Franklin D. Roosevelt in a thoughtful moment at his desk in the Oval Office, boldly signed by him as president across the lower part of the portrait, handsomely framed.

This splendid exhibition-size portrait of President Roosevelt, circa 1940, is signed by him in ink in the lower third of the image. The large vintage sepia print shows Roosevelt in a three-quarter pose, seated at his desk in the Oval Office and holding a document in his left hand. As president, Roosevelt understood photography's importance in creating the public's perception of prominent individuals worldwide. His prominent role as Commander in Chief of America's armed forces in World War II assured that he would be in the media spotlight and guaranteed that he would be the most photographed man of his era. Despite the handicap which prevented the use of his legs, Roosevelt insured that photographs portrayed him in a strong manner: "a vigorous, jaunty, active president engaged in the many activities of his office, waving to the crowds, smiling his infectious smile" (Graham & Wander, Franklin D. Roosevelt: His Life and Times, 328). Print mounted on card stock, matted and framed. Small embossed stamp at lower right corner of print recto: "Signal Corps U.S. Army."

A fine signed print.
