FIRST EDITION OF FIRST LADY ELEANOR ROOSEVELT'S YOU LEARN BY LIVING, SIGNED BY HER

ROOSEVELT, Eleanor. You Learn by Living. New York: Harper & Brothers, (1960). Octavo, original half black cloth, original dust jacket. $2800.

First edition of the beloved former First Lady and UN Human Rights ambassador's heartfelt work on how to discover life's lessons, signed by her.

You Learn by Living won praise at its publication as inspiring evidence of Eleanor Roosevelt's decision to "make a new kind of success of her life. She is playing a new role, a role set squarely in the range of action… The philosophy she offers us here comes from this experience… The importance of this role and of Mrs. Roosevelt's position is that her victory over fear and emergence into the world coincided with that of a whole generation of women. Mrs. Roosevelt, in short, is a child of her time, the first modern American woman" (New York Times). "First Edition" stated on copyright page with code "G-K," indicating publication in July 1960. Bookplate. Written above Roosevelt's signature on the front free endpaper is the notation "TCH Select Series A.C. Reception, March 22, 1961." Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt spoke at Texas Christian University on March 22, 1961, where she favorably compared the first days in office of President Kennedy with her late husband. She noted during the lecture that "there is a great deal of similarity. They both come to office in difficult times. Congress now is not under the same compelling crisis it was when my husband came to office," a reference to the Great Depression then gripping the country.

Text fine, small tear to front inner paper hinge, offsetting to rear endpapers; dust jacket with very mild soiling and bit of wear to spine ends. A near-fine copy.
