“AROUND, AROUND, COMPANIONS ALL, TAKE YOUR GROUND, AND NAME THE BELL WITH JOY PROFOUND”
ROMBERG, Andreas. Das Lied von der Glocke… Op. 25. Bonn: N. Simrock, [1808]. Oblong quarto, later vellum spine with paper boards, uncut. $900.
First edition, piano-vocal score, fully engraved, of Romberg’s best-known work.
Romberg "won European recognition as a composer, modeling his technique on Haydn and Mozart… the success of his setting of Schiller's Lied von der Glocke reached as far as New York; the work was still being performed after 1900, sometimes in its individual sections, and ran to a number of editions" (New Grove 16:145). Composed for soloists, full chorus and orchestra, and presented here in a piano-vocal version. See Hirsch IV:901.
Title page embrowned, wear to edges of uncut leaves, plates quite clean. Moderate wear to binding. A very good copy.
