“WIN ONE FOR THE GIPPER”: SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION OF KNUTE ROCKNE: MAN BUILDER, SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, QUARTERBACK HARRY STUHLDREHER, ONE OF KNUTE ROCKNE’S FOUR HORSEMEN OF NOTRE DAME
(ROCKNE, Knute) STUHLDREHER, Harry A. Knute Rockne: Man Builder. Philadelphia: Macrae Smith, 1931. Octavo, original blue cloth, uncut.
Signed limited “Notre Dame” first edition, one of an unspecified number of the first printing specially designated for the undergraduates, alumni, and friends of Notre Dame and signed by Harry A. Stuhldreher. The basis for the film Knute Rockne, All-American, which starred Ronald Reagan as George Gipp and included his most famous line: “Win one for the Gipper.”
This biography of renowned Notre Dame coach Knute Rockne was written by a member of his legendary 1924 team, quarterback Harry A. Stuhldreher. Under Rockne’s coaching, that year’s backfield became a powerhouse despite their relatively diminutive statures (all below six feet and 162 pounds). In 30 games, they lost only twice, both times to rival Nebraska. They so impressed a sportwriter that they were given the nickname, “The Four Horsemen of Notre Dame.” Stuhldreher went on to a short career with the Brooklyn Horsemen for the AFL and NFL before settling into 24 years of college coaching at Villanova and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This work, one of two by Stuhldreher, was the basis for the movie Knute Rockne, All American, starring Ronald Reagan as George Gipp and including the immortal line, “Win one for the Gipper.” With several pages of halftones.
Only mild toning to spine. A near-fine signed copy.
