“HAROLD ROBBINS IS A MASTER!” (PLAYBOY): PRESENTATION COPY OF DREAMS DIE FIRST, INSCRIBED BY ROBBINS TO HIS AGENT

ROBBINS, Harold. Dreams Die First. New York: Simon and Schuster, (1977). Octavo, original half black cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of this “explosive story of one man’s vision of liberated sexuality and how he turns that vision into a life of fame and fantasy,” inscribed, “For Paul and Zelda [Gitlin]— With much love and no lawsuits. Harold R. N.Y. 9 Oct 77.”

“Harold Robbins’ formula of sex, money and power made him one of the best-selling authors of his day… Robbins himself once said, ‘I just happen to think I’ve done better than anyone else in reflecting the times in which I live… and the claim isn’t completely absurd. If nothing else… [his] oeuvre changed American publishing.” In Dreams Die First Robbins explores the psychology of an underground newspaper editor who uses the paper as an outlet for his own repressed radical thoughts and ideas, eventually launching him into “an empire of casinos and clubs, movies and magazines, and surrounding him with models and pimps who cater to the ultra-rich.” The recipients of this copy were Robbins’ close friends Paul Gitlin and his wife Zelda. He was Robbins’ agent and attorney for 35 years. Gitlin’s modus operandi was: “I structure the deal first, and then Harold worries about the writing.” Gitlin structured extraordinary deals— for domestic rights, foreign rights, television, movies. The rights to The Adventurers, for example, were sold for a million dollars before Robbins even wrote a single word.

A fine inscribed copy.
