"A MASTER OF THE MEDIUM": RACKHAM'S SIGNED LIMITED CINDERELLA
(RACKHAM, Arthur) EVANS, Charles Seddon. Cinderella. London: William Heinemann, and Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, (1919). Tall quarto, original half vellum, parchment-covered boards, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt, uncut, custom slipcase.
Deluxe limited edition, number 196 of only 325 copies printed on Japanese vellum (out of a total edition of 850) signed by Rackham, with color frontispiece and his remarkable silhouette drawings, several printed in color, throughout.
Rackham's first great silhouette book established him as "a master of the medium, being able to evoke character and humor by profile and gesture alone, and allowing the two-dimensional effect of his pen work to lead the reader through the book and keep the story going" (Hamilton, 118). Without scarce original glassine or dust jacket. Of the total edition of 850, 325 were printed on Japanese vellum (as this copy), the other 525 on English handmade paper. Latimore & Haskell, 49. Riall, 134. Hudson, 170. Hamilton, 189.
About-fine condition, a lovely copy.
