“THE STRIKING ILLUSTRATIONS ARE AMONG HIS BEST”: HOWARD PYLE’S ARTHURIAN TETRALOGY

PYLE, Howard. The Story of King Arthur and his Knights. WITH: The Story of the Champions of the Round Table. WITH: The Story of Sir Launcelot and His Companions. WITH: The Story of the Grail and the Passing of Arthur. New York: Charles Scribner’s Sons, 1903, 1905, 1907, and 1910. Together, four volumes. Large octavo, original gilt-, black-, and red-stamped brown pictorial cloth, brown endpapers.

First editions of Pyle’s classic retelling of the Arthurian legends, with numerous detailed black-and-white illustrations, all by Pyle.

Already an established magazine illustrator, Pyle began his career as a children’s book writer and illustrator with Robin Hood, published in 1883. “In 1903 Scribner’s published Pyle’s The Story of King Arthur and His Knights, first serialized in the children’s magazine St. Nicholas. Because of the popularity of this book, Pyle produced three additional volumes: Champions of the Round Table (1905), Sir Launcelot and His Companions (1907), and The Grail and the Passing of Arthur (1910)… During his lifetime, Pyle raised American book and magazine illustration to new heights and developed new audiences for illustrative art” (ANB). “Pyle was the great innovator who revolutionized American book illustration in the late 19th century. Before 1880 there were no American artists comparable to the great British illustrators… In less than 30 years, Howard Pyle not only created the Golden Age of American illustration, but also ensured that a large group of younger artists and disciples would carry on with similar work well into the 20th century… In 1902 he began illustrating and writing his own version of the Arthurian legends… the striking illustrations are among his best” (Dalby, 35-7). Bookplate in Volume I.

Interiors fine. Inner paper hinges of Volumes I and IV expertly repaired. Endpapers of Volume III renewed. Light rubbing to cloth extremities. A fine set, scarce with all volumes together.
