SIGNED BY ANNIE PROULX AND ARTIST WILLIAM MATTHEWS

PROULX, E. Annie. Close Range: Wyoming Stories. New York: Scribner, (1999). Octavo, original half black cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Pulitzer-prize winner Proulx’s collection of stories, including the first book appearance of “Brokeback Mountain,” the inspiration for the lauded 2005 film, with six color plates after watercolors by Western artist William Matthews, signed on the title page both Matthews and Annie Proulx.

Proulx has said in an interview, "Place and history are central to the fiction I write, both in the broad, general sense and in detailed particulars. Rural North America, regional cultures, the images of an ideal and seemingly attainable world the characters cherish in their long views despite the rigid and difficult circumstances of their place and time, interest me and are what I write about." Several of the stories collected here originally appeared in The New Yorker (including "Brokeback Mountain"), The Atlantic Monthly and GQ. Published the same year as a signed limited, specially bound edition of only 150 copies.

A fine signed copy.
