“…AND THEN I WILL HAVE SOME DESSERT!”: FIRST EDITION OF POTTER’S SLY OLD CAT, ILLUSTRATED WITH 16 WATERCOLORS BY HER
POTTER, Beatrix. The Sly Old Cat. London and New York: Frederick Warne, (1971). 12mo, pictorial white cloth, original dust jacket.
First edition of Potter’s posthumously published tale of a very unusual tea party, illustrated with 16 watercolors by her.
Like The Story of a Fierce Bad Rabbit and The Story of Miss Moppet, The Sly Old Cat was to have been published in folding wallet form. It “would most probably have been published early in 1907 had not it been for an unexpected complication—the reluctance of the shops to stock copies of these panoramic books… Warnes were now considering the possibility of publishing The Sly Old Cat as an additional title in the series” in book rather than wallet form; “Potter thought the story was quite amusing and had no objection to its being published; but she did not feel inclined to prepare a set of new drawings” (Linder, 183). It did not see print until this edition.
A fine copy.
