“…AND THE ROLLING-PIN WENT ROLY-POLY, ROLY; ROLY, POLY, ROLY”
POTTER, Beatrix. The Roly-Poly Pudding. London and New York: Frederick Warne, 1908. Small octavo, original maroon cloth, mounted cover illustration, pictorial endpapers.
First edition, first issue, of one of Potter’s few books to be published in a large format, illustrated with color frontispiece, 17 color plates and numerous black-and-white vignettes.
“In The Roly-Poly Pudding Beatrix Potter expresses her love of the quaint old farmhouse at Hill Top, Sawrey, which she has taken as the setting for her story. The plot is evidently inspired by the numerous rats which were over-running the house at that time” (Linder, 192-3). In 1926 the book was reissued as The Tale of Samuel Whiskers in a smaller format, in line with Potter’s other popular titles. This first issue, with the words “All rights reserved” on the title page, was one of 7500 copies printed in October 1908. Quinby 15. Linder, 427. Bookseller’s small ticket.
Scattered light foxing and soiling. Tiny abrasion to mounted cover illustration. A near-fine copy.
