FOLIO FIRST EDITION OF PICASSO'S STUNNING SERIES, LES DEJEUNERS, 1962

PICASSO, Pablo. Les Déjeuners. (Paris): Editions Cercle d'Art, (1962). Folio, original white illustrated cloth, original glassine, original slipcase.

First trade edition in French of the drawings and paintings from Picasso's renowned series Les Déjeuners, with 93 drawings from five notebooks, 45 separate drawings, and 27 canvases.

"To say that Pablo Picasso dominated Western art in the 20th century is, by now, the merest commonplace" (Robert Hughes). This series was inspired by Edouard Manet's controversial masterpiece Déjeuner sur l'Herbe. In the preface, art critic and collector Douglas Cooper "traces the history of Picasso's 'meeting' with Manet, from the first drawings done at Vauvenargues in August, 1959, to those made at Notre Dame de Vie in Mougins in December of 1961. In these drawings, Picasso never depicts a precise scene; rather, he makes a series of more or less dramatic transformations of Manet's paintin, which Cooper divides into four phases" (Sebastian Goeppert). Introductory essay (in French) by Douglas Cooper. Published simultaneously with a deluxe edition of only 150 copies, with loose plates in portfolio. Text in French. Goeppert & Cramer 118.

Front inner paper hinge tender, binding sound. Plates fine, cloth clean and bright, wear to spine of original glassine (often not present), mild toning to slipcase. An excellent copy.
