EXTREMELY RARE FIRST ISSUE OF SHELLEY’S PROMETHEUS UNBOUND, HANDSOMELY BOUND

SHELLEY, Percy Bysshe. Prometheus Unbound, A Lyrical Drama in Four Acts, With Other Poems. London: C. and J. Ollier, 1820. Octavo, 19th-century full brown calf rebacked with elaborately gilt-decorated spine laid down, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

First edition, rare first issue, handsomely bound in full contemporary calf-gilt.

Includes Shelley's monumental Prometheus Unbound and other important poems, such as "Ode to the West Wind," "To a Skylark," "Ode to Heaven," and "Ode to Liberty," to name a few. "Prometheus is a dithyrambic of sublime exultation on the redemption of humanity, and an assemblage of all that language has of gorgeousness and verse of melody… The Ode to the West Wind is perhaps the grandest of Shelley's lyrics" (DNB). First issue, with "Misellaneous" on Table of Contents page. With very scarce half title; bound without final leaf of advertisements. Wise, 55. Forman, 94-96. Marginal ink correction.

Text generally clean. A near-fine copy of this rare and important Shelley classic.
