"HIS WRITINGS SERVED TO GIVE THE WORLD A MORE JUST AND FAVOURABLE IDEA OF THEIR PRINCIPLES, THAN COULD BE HAD FROM THE HARRANGUES OF ILLITERATE PREACHERS": FIRST EDITION OF SOME MEMOIRS OF THE RELIGIOUS LIFE OF WILLIAM PENN, 1806

(PENN, William) COOLEDGE, Daniel. Some Memoirs of the Religious Life of William Penn, Founder of Pennsylvania, and One of the People Called Quakers, To Which Is Added, Letters, Written, by Him, on Love and Friendship. Walpole, New Hampshire: Daniel Cooledge, 1806. 16mo, original blue-gray wrappers; pp. 17 + 14.

First edition of this eulogistic biography of William Penn, focusing on his religious contributions, combined with a selection of his letters on the subjects of love and friendship.

Written during a time when America was in the early stages of building its own founding mythology, this brief pamphlet discusses the life of William Penn, in terms of both his religious convictions and his goals for the founding of Pennsylvania as a law-governed state embracing freedom of worship. The author of this work, Daniel Cooledge, was a Quaker publisher and bookseller who published a number of books sharing aspects of Quaker thought. Here, he has also included several letters written by William Penn sharing his beliefs about God and about relying on faith in trying times. Sabin 59747.

A few spots of foxing and staining to interior, soiling to original wrappers, wear to extremities of wrappers and text block, early repair to spine. Extremely good condition.
