Rhymes without Reason

"THERE'S NOTHING MAKES A GREENLAND WHALE/ FEEL HALF SO HIGH-AND-MIGHTY,/ AS SITTING ON A MANTELPIECE/ IN AUNTY MABEL'S NIGHTY": MERVYN PEAKE'S 1944 CHILDREN'S BOOK RHYMES WITHOUT REASON, ILLUSTRATED BY HIM

PEAKE, Mervyn. Rhymes without Reason. London: Eyre & Spottiswoode, 1944. Slim quarto, original pale yellow cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of this collection of 16 whimsical poems accompanied by 16 color illustrations. A lovely copy of this scarce title in the original dust jacket.

"A completely different book, using flat areas of bold color, was Rhymes without Reason… There were 16 color plates but, as Punch pointed out, '[Peake] has been wretchedly served, unfortunately, by his color printers, who have reproduced them in a range of bilious hues, overlapping at the edges'… Eyre and Spottiswoode were very generous to Mervyn, but their printing of anything but text could leave much to be desired" (Winnington, Vast Alchemies, 175).

Book fine, dust jacket with a few very short closed tears, bit of soiling to rear panel only, bright and near-fine.
