“THE BEST ENGLISH WORK ON MEDICINE OF ITS TIME”: SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF OSLER’S PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES OF MEDICINE

OSLER, William. The Principles and Practices of Medicine. Designed for the Use of Practitioners and Students of Medicine. New York: D. Appleton, 1892. Thick octavo, original brown cloth.

First edition, second issue, of this landmark medical text, “the best English work on medicine of its time” (Garrison & Morton, 2231).

“One of the most influential textbooks of general medicine ever written. The chapters describe specific diseases by systems— an innovation now generally followed— and the work’s elevated literary style, coupled with its vast store of medical knowledge, brought something new to the medical textbook genre. Writing at the end of a revolutionary period in medicine, Osler was able to fill a widely felt need by incorporating into his textbook the tremendous advances, particularly in microbiology, that had forever altered the face of medicine” (Norman, 1612). “This great book was for more than a generation the bible of medical students and practitioners in all parts of the English-speaking world” (Singer & Underwood, 317). “Besides being one of the greatest of all clinicians, [Osler] was possessed of a fine literary style and an extensive knowledge of medical bibliography” (Garrison & Morton). Second issue, with Plato’s Gorgias spelled correctly on the verso of the third leaf; the second issue was published two months after the first. With 14 pages of publisher’s advertisements dated March 1892 bound at rear. Bibliotheca Osleriana 3544. Norman 1613. Lilly, 233. Owner signature of Stockton Kimball, former dean of the University of Buffalo School of Medicine.

Minor expert restoration to inner hinges and cloth extremities. An extremely good copy.
