INSCRIBED AND TWICE SIGNED BY DAVID FROST: FIRST EDITION OF “I GAVE THEM A SWORD” ON HIS FAMED 1977 INTERVIEWS WITH PRESIDENT NIXON

(NIXON, Richard) FROST, David. “I Gave Them a Sword”: Behind the Scenes of the Nixon Interviews. New York: William Morrow, 1978. Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket.

First edition of Frost’s behind-the-scenes record of his landmark interviews with Nixon, a scarce presentation copy inscribed by Frost on the half title to publicist John Springer, “To John from David Frost, who made P124 such a highlight,” additionally signed by Frost (page 124) above his circled image of Springer, pictured alongside Frost in a photograph taken during the interviews.

“I Gave Them A Sword”—its title drawn from a comment by President Nixon—is David Frost’s fascinating record of his 1977 interviews with Nixon. It was especially praised on publication for revealing “the dedication and sense of responsibility he and his colleagues brought to their task… Indeed it is most compelling in its picture of the way Frost puts together a blockbuster like this one… Frost and his staff clearly relished the intrigue and secrecy involved” (New York Times). Basis for the 2007 Tony Award-winning Broadway drama, Frost/Nixon, that also earned star Frank Langella a Tony and other awards: later adapted to the screen in the Oscar-nominated film. “First Edition” stated on copyright page. With seven pages of black-and-white photographic illustrations.

A fine inscribed copy.
