House of Incest

“ALL THAT I KNOW IS CONTAINED IN THIS BOOK”: PRESENTATION COPY OF HOUSE OF INCEST, WARMLY INSCRIBED BY ANAIS NIN WITH A QUOTATION FROM THE BOOK

NIN, Anais. House of Incest. [New York]: Gemor Press, [1947]. Slim octavo, original pictorial orange cloth.

First American edition, published at Nin’s own expense, warmly inscribed by Nin: “For Lillian Sable ‘All that I know is contained in this book written without witness, an edifice without dimension, a city hanging in the sky.’ In gratitude for your understanding. Anais Nin 1951.”

After being rejected by numerous publishers, The House of Incest, Nin’s first work of fiction, was first published in Paris in 1936 by Siana editions, a press that she helped to co-found. When the author returned to the United States in the 1940s, she established the Gemor Press, publishing many of her own works, including this one, at her personal expense. Often considered a prose poem due to its dream-like resonance, The House of Incest emphasizes psychological states rather than realistic events. Without scarce original dust jacket. The quotation included in Nin’s inscription is drawn from the epigraph.

Only light wear to original cloth. A near-fine inscribed copy.
