New York & Brooklyn Bridge

“ONE OF THE MORE IMPORTANT VISUAL RECORDS”: SCARCE 1883 ALBUM OF 35 PHOTOLITHOGRAPHIC VIEWS OF BROOKLYN AND THE BROOKLYN BRIDGE, WITH A SPLENDID PANORAMA OF THE BRIDGE

(NEW YORK). New York & Brooklyn Bridge and Brooklyn City. New York: Wittemann Bros., 1883. Small oblong quarto (5 by 7 inches), original embossed gilt-stamped green cloth.

1883 souvenir album of Brooklyn and the newly completed Brooklyn Bridge, with 35 beautiful photolithographic views displayed on 12 accordion-fold panels, featuring a double-page panorama of the Brooklyn Bridge rising against the skyline, scarce in original embossed gilt-stamped boards.

This scarce 1883 album of New York highlights Brooklyn and the recently completed Brooklyn Bridge with 35 beautiful photolithographic views arrayed on 12 accordion-fold panels. The album opens with a wonderful double-page panorama of the Bridge as its rises above sailing ships and steamships, and continues with views from Fulton Ferry and the New York Pier, along with images of President Arthur opening the Bridge, a portrait of J.A. Roebling and more. Also included are beautifully detailed images of Brooklyn’s City Hall, the Navy Yard and scenic views of Prospect Park. Published by New York’s Wittemann Brothers, the album was manufactured in Germany by Glaser and Frey, who “used a multi-stone lithographic process to achieve a monochromatic effect that seems to have been rare if not unknown among American lithographers. Using five or more stones, they laid down a series of separate shades ranging from white to light sepia-gray to the darkest sepia-gray or black. The finished lithograph has a varnished look that creates greater illusion of depth… The images are often sharper and more attractive than the extant photographs… These albums constitute one of the more important visual records” of late 19th-century America (Ron Tyler). Panels with printed captions in English and German. Publisher’s ad tipped to rear pastedown.

Tiny closed tear to upper edge of panorama expertly reinforced. An exceptional copy in fine condition.
